Becoming an influencer is a process that starts with gaining your audiences trust. It is the most important factor of influencer journey that can only be gained through authenticity and connection you build with your audience.

Today the word “influencers” immediately makes us think about celebrities and famous faces who help their fans consume culture. But there are many more influencers who have gained a massive following thanks to social media reach and have become as big as Bollywood superstars simply through their passion for what they stand for, content that resonates and conviction that audiences are ready to believe.

If you dream about having the same effect on people and be defined by your career as an ‘influencer’ – all you need is the skills, resolve and content which will help you embark on this journey. Here are 6  steps to help you get started on your influencer journey:

  1. WHY DO YOU WANT TO BE AN INFLUENCER?

Being an influencer today isn’t a piece of cake. It arises out of your ‘passion’ and requires time, efforts and creativity. Therefore, having clarity in terms of why you want to be an influencer is extremely important. Do you want to be an entertainer or a reformer? Do you want to win people’s hearts with your glamour quotient or your sensitivity? The answer to this ‘Why’ will give your presence and content in the digital world a stronger purpose.

  1. WHAT IS YOUR AREA OF EXPERTISE?

The first and foremost aspect is to know what you are good at. Introspect to know your strengths and how you can bring it to light in the most comfortable manner. This the research and ideation phase where you decide what is going to be the ‘foundation’ of the content that you will create. This decision is the starting point of your influencer journey. Therefore, take time, research, process and strategize a step-by-step plan of action.

  1. WHO IS YOUR AUDIENCE?

You have to comprehend your audience and really envisage what sector are you targeting so that your content creation process doesn’t go haywire. You have to keep in mind whether you are creating content for the ones who indulge in luxuries or the ones who put value for money above everything else. Are you going for mass audience with your talent, or is there a niche that is looking for your creativity. Demographics like age, gender, habits etc. also weigh in for you to consider. You have to be in tune with your audience’s habits and especially their expectations.

  1. WHERE SHOULD YOU START?

We live in the digital age wherein quite literally ‘every platform is in our palms’. Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Twitter, Pinterest and many more platforms are home to the best influencers. You have to delineate which platform is the best for you to start off with before you venture into the others. If your content revolves around videography, you can create your YouTube channel to kickstart your journey. If you want to become a travel influencer, Instagram works perfectly as you can do everything – post pictures, videos on the IGTV, share stories and engage your audience with live Q&A sessions. You can start establishing an online presence and come to a consensus about which platform is best for you keeping in mind demographics like the increase/decrease in number of followers, which content garnered maximum engagement and so on.

  1. WHEN SHOULD YOU START?

Taking all the factors into consideration, you should jump on the bandwagon when you have accumulated the resources that will fortify your journey, you have invested in good equipment, you should be extremely careful about your finances and investments. Mentally, you have to be prepared as you embark into this territory with unforeseen circumstances, you need to be acquainted with the latest trends and fads to create content that resonates with your audience. You have to be pragmatic in your approach.

  1. HOW TO KEEP GOING?

Your influencer journey will not be the same as everyone else’s. It is a solo roller coaster ride, with a fair share of ups and downs. The good times should not make you stop researching and experimenting with newer styles. The bad times might leave you restless but remember patience and persistence is the key to success. Be consistent about sharing the content, follow the ritual religiously. You should post the content on regular intervals and around one particular time. Creating series and themes is always a good idea to keep your audiences glued to your page/content. Always look at things from various lenses, something that might seem bizarre to you might be a unique idea for someone who follows you, thus urging them to keep coming back to your digital channels. You can and should create multiple characters to engage your audience but always remember to bring a piece of yourself on the page in these characters or otherwise to connect with them on a personal front.
